THE STORY: After the success of Crazy Rich Asians, HBO announced their “Asian Visionary Contest.” I saw an opportunity to shake things up with a dark comedy concept that made fun of the “Asians get Straight A’s” stereotype. The first short followed Ernie Yee, great at everything, but one thing. We followed it up with a more family-oriented storyline. Who loves a crying baby? No one!

Both “episodes” played as part of a shorts block at local festivals. Laughter really is the best medicine, it’s so rewarding to hear the audience laugh in anticipation of the “Oh No he didn’t!’ moments.

AHEAD OF THE ZEITGEIST

No Beef with Beef.

There’s been much-deserved hype around the hot Netflix show, “Beef” that shows Asians that act against type. Small spoiler, some of the themes revolved around therapy and mental health.

I love that this was something I explored in my own voice and style in this anthology series.
